Accreditation System for Irish- English Translators

An accreditation system for Irish- English translators is being developed by Foras na Gaeilge at the request of the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív, T.D.

An accreditation certificate will be awarded to translators who reach a level of excellence. As a first step in testing this standard an examination will be held in February 2006, and at regular intervals subsequently. A panel of accredited translators will be thus established, which will be available to the public and private sectors by May, 2006.

This accreditation system will be a continuous process and support will be offered to people seeking to achieve accreditation. This system is for the benefit of individual translators and translation agencies, and the certificate of accreditation will safeguard the reputation of competent translators.

A seminar will be held on 20th January, 2006 from 10.00 - 12.30 pm at Foras na Gaeilge, 7 Merrion Square, Dublin 2, in order to discuss the system with the translation sector. Individual translators, representatives from translation agencies and other interested parties will be welcome.
