Hugger mugger – the virus of misinformation in Ireland

Media Literacy Ireland has organised an event in conjunction with Raidió na Gaeltachta as part of the Be Media Smart campaign. The organisation’s description of the event can be read below.

Hugger mugger – the virus of misinformation in Ireland

Almost a year ago, as COVID-19 took hold across the world, Dr. Mike Ryan, Head of the WHO’s health emergencies program, highlighted the risks posed by another viral scourge – misinformation – and called it an infodemic. Since then we have seen the development of a number of COVID-19 vaccines, but unfortunately there is no vaccine against misinformation.

During this combined webinar and pre-record of the An tSeachtain le Máirín Ní Ghadhra programme, Máirín Ní Ghadhra will host a wide-ranging discussion exploring the impact of the misinformation that the public is exposed to on a daily basis and the challenges facing us all when it comes to making sure that we ‘Stop, Think and Check’ that the information that we read, hear, see and share is accurate and reliable.

Joining Máirín Ní Ghadhra will be Póilín Ní Chiaráin (Journalist), Eoghan Ó Neachtain (Director of Public Affairs- Heneghan), Professor Cathal Seoighe (NUIG) and Dr. Mairéad Nic Giolla Mhíchíl (DCU).

The webinar and recording will take place on the 1st of April at 3.00pm and will be broadcast on Raidió na Gaeltachta on Easter Sunday, the 4th of April at 10.00am.
