Almost ¼ million euro approved by Foras na Gaeilge board for Gaeltacht Scholarships

02Aug

At a meeting in Belfast on Friday 26 July, Foras na Gaeilge’s board approved an investment worth €241,572 over a three year period for The Gaeltacht Scholarship Scheme 2020-2022. The scheme will provide grants to 3 specific groups which include students under 18 (in Northern Ireland only), adults (on an all-island basis) and families (on an all-island basis).

Foras na Gaeilge provided €80,524 during 2019 through its Scholarship Fund which provides scholarships to students, adults and families in order for them to attend Gaeltacht courses. Under the revised scheme additional emphasis will be placed on providing grants to disadvantaged students, as well as applicants from Gaeltacht Service Towns and Networks. The scheme will be announced in September and applications will be accepted from organisations who wish to manage the schemes from then.

Foras na Gaeilge is currently conducting a consultation process to gather the views of the public on how best to fund the Irish language print and online media sector from the €500k fund Foras na Gaeilge provides on an annual basis to publications tuairisc.ie, nós.ie and Comhar.

Foras na Gaeilge Chairman, Pól Ó Gallchóir, said “It is crucial that the public, both the Irish language community and the broader public north and south share their views with us to ensure that they are included in Foras na Gaeilge’s approach to this important sector from 2020 on.“
