The Minister for Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht, Catherine Martin, T.D. and the Government Chief Whip and the Minister of State for the Gaeltacht and Sport, Jack Chambers TD, today announced that the language plan for Letterkenny in County Donegal has been approved under the language planning process – which means that the town is now recognised as a Gaeltacht service town. They also announced that an annual allowance of up to €80,000 will be provided under the process to support the implementation of the plan. The allowance will be used to employ a Language Planning Officer to help implement the language plan for the town.

Both Ministers stated; “We would like to congratulate the organisation, Líonra Leitir Ceanainn, and the town’s community in general for all they have done to complete this plan. We would also like to congratulate Foras na Gaeilge which supported the lead organisation while the plan was being prepared. The approval of this plan means that a language plan will be implemented in a Gaeltacht service town for the very first time. It goes without saying that we, our officers and the officers at Foras na Gaeilge look forward to working with interested parties in supporting the implementation of the language plan for Letterkenny.”
