£210,000 approved for East Belfast Mission Turas project

Foras na Gaeilge is delighted to announce that a grant to the value of £210,000 has been approved for East Belfast Mission to develop the Turas project over a 3 year period.

Turas was established in 2012 to promote the Irish language among the Protestant, unionist and loyalist community in the north and the project aims to raise awareness about the Irish language locally, at government level and at cross-border level.

East Belfast Mission have prepared a comprehensive plan which mainly focuses on developing Irish language awareness as well creating opportunities for learning and practise for learners to develop the Irish language among the unionist community in east Belfast and throughout Northern Ireland. Turas currently provides 14 Irish language classes to 200 learners as well as heritage sessions and cultural events on a weekly basis.

Foras na Gaeilge Chief Executive Officer Seán Ó Coinn said, “This project is changing the landscape of the Irish language throughout the island, particularly in the north, and shows the people of the island that Irish is not connected to a political point of view or national identity  – rather that Irish belongs to this island and the people of the island.“

Turas Development Officer, Linda Ervine said, “We greatly appreciate the support of Foras na Gaeilge for Turas and we will be able to continue bringing the Irish language to new communities and potential learners as well as supporting our existing learners by providing opportunities for them to improve their language skills.”

Fógra scoir Chois Life agus na dúshláin in earnáil na foilsitheoireachta Gaeilge

Ráiteas ó Phríomhfheidhmeannach Fhoras na Gaeilge, Seán Ó Coinn maidir le fógra scoir Chois Life agus na dúshláin in earnáil na foilsitheoireachta Gaeilge:

Is oth le Foras na Gaeilge fógra scoir Chois Life, comhlacht foilsitheoireachta a bhfuil ard-mholadh tuillte acu as a bhfuil bainte amach acu ó bunaíodh iad in 1995. Fágfaidh siad bearna san earnáil lena n-imeacht, nach mbeidh furasta a líonadh, nó bhí sainchúram ar leith déanta acu de chur chuige ar leith agus de réimse ar leith foilsitheoireachta. Ar ndóigh chuir saineolas agus taithí na stiúrthóirí go mór leis an chur chuige sin agus leis na tacaíocht a chuir siad ar fáil dá n-údair.

Aithníonn Foras na Gaeilge go bhfuil earnáil na foilsitheoireachta Gaeilge an-leochaileach, mar atá earnáil na foilsitheoireachta i gcoitinne in Éirinn. Tá dúshláin go leor le sárú ag na foilsitheoirí Gaeilge, ar comhlachtaí beaga teaghlaigh a mbunús, agus gan ach duine nó beirt ag plé leo. Aithnímid fosta go bhfuil earnáil na leabhar an-iomaíoch faoi láthair go hidirnáisiúnta, agus go bhfuil deacrachtaí móra ann in earnáil na Gaeilge maidir le pobal léitheoireachta, siopaí leabhar, scríbhneoirí úra, foilsitheoireacht agus eagarthóireacht, gan trácht ach ar chuid de na dúshláin. Tá ciorruithe móra déanta ó thús na géarchéime eacnamaíochta ar mhaoiniú an stáit do Chlár na Leabhar Gaeilge, atá gearrtha ó €1.8m in 2008 go €1.06 in 2017, laghdú de os cionn €700,000. Níl aon amhras orainn go bhfuil seo ag dul i bhfeidhm ar earnáil na foilsitheoireachta Gaeilge ar bhealach diúltach. Ach tá sé tábhachtach a aithint go bhfuil gníomhartha níos leithne de dhíth agus nach réiteoidh maoiniú breise amháin na dúshláin in earnáil na foilsitheoireachta. Tá súil ag Foras na Gaeilge cruinniú a shocrú le stiúrthóirí Chois Life agus le Cumann na bhFoilsitheoirí leis na dúshláin seo a chíoradh.

Cé go bhfuil feabhas i ndiaidh teacht ar chúrsaí margaíochta agus dáileacháin leabhar le blianta beaga anuas, tá an timpeallacht tráchtála do dhíol leabhar an-dúshlánach in earnáil na Gaeilge agus in earnáil an Bhéarla. Agus is cinnte go dtagann méadú suntasach ar chúrsaí riaracháin de réir mar a mhéadaítear ar líon na n-údar, líon na leabhar agus láimhseáil cúlstoic.

Tá Foras na Gaeilge i ndiaidh roinnt tionscnamh a bhunú le blianta beaga anuas le haghaidh a thabhairt ar na dúshláin i gcomhar leis na foilsitheoirí, agus le haghaidh a thabhairt ar cheist na léitheoireachta i measc phobal na Gaeilge. Ach aithnímid fosta go bhfuilimid ag plé le ceist atá an-chasta mar atá ceist nósmhaireachtaí léitheoireachta i measc lucht mionteanga ar fud an domhain, agus go bhfuil réimse beart de dhíth le haghaidh a thabhairt ar cheist na léitheoireachta i measc idir óg agus aosta i bpobal na Gaeilge.

Agus muid ag aithint go bhféadfadh athruithe suntasacha tarlú in earnáil na foilsitheoireachta Gaeilge sna 10 mbliana atá romhainn, beidh Foras na Gaeilge ag iarraidh an cheist seo a phlé go mion le Cumann na bhFoilsitheoirí,  leis an Rialtas ó dheas, agus le páirtithe leasmhara eile thuaidh agus theas idir seo agus deireadh na bliana, ach aithnímid nach bhfuil aon ghníomh suntasach amháin is féidir a dhéanamh leis an cheist chasta seo a réiteach.

Foras na Gaeilge welcomes the 2018-2022 Action Plan for the 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language 2010-2030

Foras na Gaeilge welcomes the 2018-2022 Action Plan for the 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language 2010-2030 launched by Government Chief Whip and Minister of State for Irish, the Gaeltacht and Islands Joe McHugh TD today in Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair. In partnership with other stakeholders, Foras na Gaeilge will have a role in implementing the five year plan which sets out main goals for nine areas for action including education and dictionaries.

Speaking at the launch event the today, Foras na Gaeilge Chief Executive Seán Ó Coinn said, “Momentum was lost in the early years due to the economic crisis, causing the public to become disillusioned with the progress of the strategy.  But it is worth recognising that there has been a significant change in recent years and it is clear that the government now intends to increase their efforts to tackle the challenge of developing Irish in the Gaeltacht and in the rest of the country. Foras na Gaeilge strongly supports the partnership approach recommended between government departments and organisations, and we ask the public, both the Irish language community and those who are not fluent, to continue to be involved. Although government departments and state and public organisations are responsible for achieving the goals, we will heavily rely on the public’s co-ownership of the strategy.”

Foras na Gaeilge commends this effort by the government to compensate for the poor start in those early years by tackling the challenges of the 20 Year Strategy for Irish 2010-2030 with the five year implementation plan. Speaking after the launch of the action plan, Foras na Gaeilge Chairperson Pól Ó Gallchóir said, “We are proud of the part Foras na Gaeilge will play in this work, in partnership with our colleagues in Údarás na Gaeltachta, in the Irish language lead organisations, and especially in the other government departments. With the commitment shown by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs, the Department of Education and Skills and state bodies, there is no doubt that significant progress can be made in the period from now until five years.”

Foras na Gaeilge congratulates An Taoiseach and the Minister of State for their commitment to the Irish language and for showing leadership to their government colleagues, not only in terms of their continuing efforts to use Irish, but also their support for it.

Grants worth half a million approved by Foras na Gaeilge for innovative youth, community and GAA projects

22 June 2018

At a Foras na Gaeilge board meeting today grants worth €522,077/£469,870 were approved in the areas of youth, education and community.

A total of €334,855 was approved for the Youth Events Scheme 2018/19 which provides opportunities for use to young people to encourage them to use the Irish language in an enjoyable way. The grants will enable groups to organise at least 12 sessions during the school year for young people between 3 and 18 years old outside of school. Grants (maximum value of €4,063/£3,337) will be awarded to 85 grantees in 25 counties north and south under this scheme.

A grant worth £73,000 was approved for Cúram Leanaí Bheann Mhadagáin child care, which has been a foundation stone for Irish medium education in Ardoyne in north Belfast since 2016, an area where 23% of the population have Irish according to the 2011 census. The grant will be provided through the Investment Fund for the Establishment of Preschool and Child Care Provision 2018 to support the development of Irish medium education and employment through Irish by providing high quality day care.

Part funding of £75,000 was approved for the Ulster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association, which aims to put an action plan in place for Irish between 2018 and 2020. The grant will enable Ulster GAA to focus on different target groups to strengthen the use of Irish among them through training, new facilities and opportunities for use in the clubs.

As part of the Colmcille Grants Scheme, a grant worth £10,000 was approved for the Carntogher Community Association to run Iomáin Cholmcille 2018. Iomáin Cholmcille is the largest Irish language and Scottish Gaelic project taking place on an annual basis with a grant from Colmcille. The festival and competition celebrate hurling traditions in Ireland and Scotland with men, women and young people from both countries taking part. £10,500 was approved for Club Óige Lúraigh youth club to attend Fèis Eilean an Fhraoich in Lewis during the summer. The grant will give 25 young people and youth workers from Co. Derry the opportunity visit the Isle of Lewis, a trip which will greatly increase their awareness of Scottish Gaelic and strengthen the bond between them and their peers in Scotland.

Foras na Gaeilge Chief Executive Seán Ó Coinn said, “For some years Foras na Gaeilge has been developing our partnership with the Gaelic Athletic Association, and I am happy that this has resulted in a new initiative with the Ulster Council which will greatly increase the use of Irish among those involved in the GAA. We are very excited about the child care project in Belfast which will greatly increase the use of Irish at community level.  This is the first time that we have invested in a child care initiative of its kind. The pioneering work being undertaken by all the voluntary groups for whom grants have been approved today demonstrates the possibilities for the development of the Irish language among all age groups.  We wish all grantees every success with these inspirational projects.”

Mórchoimisiún nua de chuid Amharclann na Mainistreach á léiriú ag An Taibhdhearc i gcomhar le Galway International Arts Festival
Déardaoin 12 – Domhnach 22 Iúil 2018 @ 7.30pm
Matinees 14 & 22 Iúil @ 2pm

“... an ciúnas a chreimfeas an ceantar seo –
níos measa ná ceimiceán ar bith...”

Scéal cumhachtach, comhaimseartha é BAOITE faoi lánúin iascaireachta a bristear ó chéile de bharr ciúnas agus bréaga an phobail agus iad sáite in agóid in aghaidh comhlachta fracála mara. Scalann an scéinséir drámatúil seo solas lom géar ar shícé tuaithe na hÉireann – sícé an chiúnais, sícé an náire, agus sícé na mbréag, trí shúile an phríomhcharachtair, Cáit.
Tá Cáit ag iarraidh gasúir. Agus a tríú hiarracht ar IVF ag teip, tá cinneadh tromchúiseach le tógáil aici – seasamh lena pobal agus iad ag cur in aghaidh na fracála – nó loic ar a muintir agus a comharsainn ar mhaithe le mian a croí féin.
Tá scoth na n-aisteoirí páirteach sa dráma seo: Siobhan O’Kelly, Macdara Ó Fátharta, Diarmuid De Faoite agus Seán T. Ó Meallaigh, le ceol nua-chumtha á chasadh beo ag Saileog Ní Cheannabháin agus Maitiú Ó Casaide. Is é an t-ealaíontóir Seán Ó Flaithearta atá i mbun dearaidh, agus is é an t-údar Darach Mac Con Iomaire atá i mbun léirithe.
Beidh tóir ar thicéid don dráma seo agus moltar don phobal ar spéis leo BAOITE a fheiceáil a gcuid ticéad a chur in áirithe go luath.

ní fhaca tú tada – is níl milleán ar éinne...”
