All aboard with Té

A new version of www.té, The National Terminology Database for Irish, was launched during Seachtain na Gaeilge at a launch event at Foras na Gaeilge headquarters today. The new website was developed by Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge, DCU with funding from Foras na Gaeilge.

www.té is a platform for publishing the work of the Terminology Committee, a collection of terminology that covers a broad range of technical fields, from contemporary computing to traditional sailing. The database contains approximately 185,000 bilingual entries and has been one of the most widely-used Irish-language digital resources since its launch in 2006. Users of the site made over 7.5 million searches in the database in 2018.

The appearance of the website has been totally redesigned in a clean, contemporary style that is in keeping with other Foras na Gaeilge language resources. The new site has a responsive design, meaning that it will render well on a variety of devices or screen sizes.

The homepage now contains a feature that lists entries that have been recently added to the database, e.g. open top bus (bus oscailte), gealach na fola (blood moon), teorainn réidh (soft border) and tionchaire (influencer). Another new feature is the browsable domain list, providing a different way of querying the database.

Terms listed in the search results now have an additional feature which provides one-click access to searches in several other Irish-language resources (i.e. www.focló,, and Nua-Chorpas na hÉireann).

Foras na Gaeilge CEO, Seán Ó Coinn said, “For over 10 years, since the terminology website was made available to the public for the first time, Irish terminology and lexicography have dramatically changed in ways you would not expect in that short period of time. That transformation not only shows the linguistic expertise we have among us, but also reveals the technological expertise and partnership. Foras na Gaeilge has a very beneficial collaboration with third level institutions in relation to lexicography and terminology initiatives which allow us to make achievements that would not be possible for us to make alone.  I would like to thank Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge DCU in particular in relation to this project. I would also like to thank members of The Terminology Committee for being so generous with their time and expertise; the result of their work can be seen on this new site.”

Note for editor:

The following developments made on www.té

  • A multilingual terminology database containing approximately 185,000 concepts
  • Quick search providing exact results and related results
  • Advanced search for more specific queries
  • Browse by domain
  • Links to other language resources, i.e. focló,,, Nua-Chorpas na hÉireann
  • Terminology data available for download in TBX & TXT format
  • Terminology request form to make an enquiry to the Terminology Committee
  • Source code available under open licence

The new version of www.té uses an onomasiological (or concept-based) approach with the search term being listed separately under each of the different concepts to which it refers. The previous version followed a semasiological (or dictionary-based) approach wherein the different meanings of a term were laid out under a headword. The main reason for this shift in emphasis is to differentiate more effectively between www.té as a source for technical terms and online dictionaries which focus on general language.

In addition to the new features mentioned above, the terminology management system behind www.té has been totally re-engineered. This is an essential aspect of the project that is not visible to the public but enables the effective storage and editing of the terminological data. 'Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge, DCU will launch Terminologue, a public, cloud-based version of this platform at in April 2019. This new resource will allow users to create, edit and publish their own termbases free of charge. In addition, the source code for both www.té agus Terminologue will soon be published at

TechFéile 2019

TechFéile 2019

Thursday 14 March 2019, The Black Box Theatre, Galway

The TechSpace Programme is an inspirational and celebratory day for young people and educators alike.

TechFéile is being held this year for the second time in Galway, on the 14 March this week. TechFéile is an Irish version of the Creative Tech Fest event which has been run for several years now by TechSpace. TechFéile will be based around 20 workshops and 10 competitions this year. There will be workshops on a range of different areas concerning media communications and technology; including Weather Workshops, Sports Commentary, Web Design, 3D Printing and Computer Games. This is a wonderful opportunity for schools/youth centres to showcase their achievements and is a celebration of the great work being undertaken by young people in creative technology.

TG4, Conradh na Gaeilge and Camara Education are collaborating with the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to run this TechFéile event. It is being held in the Black Box Theatre and the aim of the event is to encourage creativity and technology among school children from the Gaeltacht and Gaelscoileanna right across the country. It is expected that over 200 students from Gaeltacht schools and Gaelscoileanna will attend as part of the TechSpace programme.

Among the guests speaking on the day will be television star Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh, and there will be music from the bands Togra from Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne and Driseog from Coláiste Chroí Mhuire, An Spidéal.

Chief Whip and Minister of State for Gaeilge, the Gaeltacht and the Islands, Seán Kyne TD had this to say:

“I am delighted that the TechSpace Programme, as it is now called, is being rolled out nationally this year. My Department has been providing funding annually for this programme since 2015. Funding of €419,108 has been approved for this proposal for 2019 and funding for TechFéile is included in this. TechFéile is an occasion of great pride and inspiration and I am extremely pleased that my Department has been able to fund it again this year. This is the second year that TechFéile has been held and it is a great opportunity for young people to showcase their imagination and creativity. It provides a special opportunity for young people to further their technological and artistic skills while using the Irish language.”

The TechSpace programme has been running for the last 4 years under the aegis of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

Cuireadh tús oifigiúil le Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia inniu le tráthnóna siamsaíochta sráide agus spraoi teaghlaigh.  Beidh an fhéile á ceiliúadh ón 1 - 17 Márta i mbliana. Seoladh an fhéile inniu i Muineachán ag Ard Fheis Conradh na Gaeilge.  Is é "Teanga gan Teorainn" téama na hArd-Fheise i mbliana, atá feiliúnach don cheiliúradh idirnáisiúnta teanga seo.

Is iad Tracy Clifford, láithreoir le 2fm; peileadóir Atha Cliath Michael Darragh MacAuley; amhránaí Sibéal Ní Chasaide as Ráth Chairn; agus Linda Ervine, Oifigeach Forbartha Gaeilge in  Officer in East Belfast.

Tracy Clifford, láithreoir 2fm agus ambasadóir Sheachtain na Gaeilge le Energia said; “Táimid ar fad an-sásta bheith inár n-ambasadóirí ar Sheachtain na Gaeilge le Energia.  Ghlac os cionn 750,000 duine ar fud an domhain páirt, a léiríonn go bhfuil an teanga beo agus bríomhar.  Ní gá bheith líofa le sult a bhaint as an teanga agus cultúr, is deis iontach í an fhéile páirt a ghlacadh ar bhealach beag nó mór, ar scoil, sa bhaile, nó ag ceann de na himeachtaí áitiúla nó idirnáisiúnta.”

I mbliana, i measc na mílte imeacht spéisiúil eile, beidh Lá na Meán Sóisialta #LNMS19, a bheidh á reáchtáil i scoileanna áitiúla, ar líne, agus go hidirnáisiúnta le fás agus forbairt na teanga ar líne a cheiliúradh.
