Bás tobann is ábhar do dhráma nua atá le craoladh ar Raidió na Life

Nuair a thagann iascairí i mBinn Éadair ar chorpán fir san fharraige, cuirtear fios ar na Gardaí mar is gnách, ach ní haon ghnáth-chorpán atá ann. Sa dráma comhaimseartha ‘Teachtaireachtaí Iar-Bháis’, tugtar an éisteoir ar thuras mistéireach le bleachtaire stuama agus é ag iarraidh an fhírinne a aimsiú faoi bhás craoltóir clúiteach. Craolfar an dráma Dé Céadaoin 20ú Feabhra ag 20:00 agus athchraolfar é ag 10:00 Dé Satharn 23ú Feabhra.

Ó pheann Chathal Póirtéir, is dráma lán le rúin agus tragóid é ‘Teachtaireachtaí Iar-Bháis’ agus é ag leanúint traidisiúin an seánra bleachtaireachta.

Ag glacadh páirte sa dráma, tá na haisteoirí Sinéad Ni Uallacháin (atá le feiceáil sa ghrianghraf faoi iamh), Carrie Crowley, Áine Ní Ghlinn agus Con Ó Tuama. Ba é an craoltóir Cathal Póirtéir a scríobh agus a léirigh é. Judy-Meg Ní Chinnéide a bhí mar léiritheoir feidhmiúcháin ar son Raidió na Life. Fuair an tsraith maoiniú ó scéim Fuaim & Fís Údarás Craolacháin na hÉireann.

Significant update to content of the New English-Irish Dictionary

“Body shaming, single-use plastic, withdrawal agreement and emergency accommodation included for the first time”

Foras na Gaeilge completed a significant update to the material on the New English-Irish Dictionary website on Thursday 10 January. As part of the ongoing work on the print version of the dictionary over 13,000 entries were edited in the last year. Entries were improved, errors corrected and additional sound and grammar files added to translations.

As well as the amendments above, over 100 new entries and senses were added to the dictionary. These were added based on current affairs, analysis of unsuccessful searches on the website, feedback and requests from users, and everyday use of Hiberno-English. Among the new entries and senses included are:

  • Current affairs: backstop, burqa, shaming (body shaming), Eurosceptic, withdrawal agreement, homeless crisis, emergency accommodation, rough sleeper, homeless hub, single-use plastic, House of Commons, regulatory alignment, customs arrangement, hard border, soft border, frictionless economy, direct trade.
  • Searches by and requests from users: craft beer, cutie, soakage, snowball fight, influencer, critical thinking, Dubai, carpool, sparkling water, pay gap, transformative.
  • Hiberno-English: to make strange with sb, quare, scutter, hames, to be sore on sb, cat (the weather’s cat), not the sharpest tool in the shed.

There has been a consistent rise in the number of users of the dictionary since its launch in January 2013. In 2018, over 1.9 million users accessed foclóir.ie and the dictionary team is confident that they will reach 2 million users per year before long.

The New English-Irish Dictionary is the primary dictionary project being undertaken by Foras na Gaeilge at present. It is available free of charge online and as an app, and will be available in print form in 2020.

We regularly receive feedback from the public in relation to the dictionary, both the content and functionality. We’re very grateful to everyone who takes the time to provide us with such valuable feedback and have made many changes to the dictionary as a result. Contact us at aiseolas@focloir.ie.

Good Piping Film

Hi Dubliners!

You are cordially invited on Friday, January 4th to a screening of Good Piping, a feature documentary film on Irish musicians playing Ireland’s most enigmatic instrument, the uilleann pipes. “This rare, ancient bagpipe may occasionally be seen in a pub or at a festival, but as a historical soloist, leading dances and harrowing souls, the instrument remains a fleeting character, even in its native Ireland” (Na Píobairí, 2002). Good Piping has only screened twice in Ireland – once at the IFI and once in Miltown during Willie Week. The film itself has been a “fleeting character” and we are delighted to announce its recent release on DVD & Blu-ray – please go to: www.GoodPipingFilm.com for more info. We are bringing the film back to Ireland for a series of screenings in 2019 to celebrate the release. This will be the lone screening in Dublin and it’s set to be a fun one!

The screening will be at The Sugar Club on Leeson and is kindly sponsored by Foras na Gaeilge. Doors open at 7.30 p.m. and we’ll have a trio of young traditional musicians (TBA) playing us in. Come and have a drink before and enjoy the music. DVD’s/Blu-ray & Posters will be for sale throughout the night. Around 8:15pm we will begin seating and the film will go on at 8:30pm sharp. The director and cast will be in attendance for a Q&A after the movie. And of course, there'll be an After Seisún with musicians at the club or a nearby pub.

More than €3 million in grants approved by Foras na Gaeilge board at last meeting of the year

Foras na Gaeilge is pleased to announce that more than €3 million in grants have been approved, in the areas of radio, literature, publishing, community and education, at the last meeting of the Foras na Gaeilge board in 2018.

Grants were approved for Raidió na Life (€720,000 over a period of three years) and for Raidió Fáilte (£648,000 over a three year period) under the Community Radio Scheme 2019-2021, which will support both stations in providing an Irish language broadcast schedule to local listening communities in Dublin and Belfast.  Grants were approved to promote Irish language literature and publishing through the Literature Projects Scheme 2019 (€103,005) and the Publishing Scheme (€674,574) which will support the plans of 13 Irish language publishing companies in 2019 including Coiscéim, LeabhairCOMHAR and Leabhar Breac.

In the field of education four grants worth €80,524 in total, were approved for the Scholarships Scheme 2019. The grants will be awarded to three lead organisations: Conradh na Gaeilge (€38,541), Gael Linn (€28,305) and Cumann na bhFiann (€3,678), as well as Cumann an Phiarsaigh (€10,000) to give young people, adults and families the opportunity to attend Gaeltacht courses in 2019. 509 learners, 421 young people, 24 adults and 15 families benefited from the scheme in 2018.

€120,000 was approved for the lead organisation Gael Linn to run the Gaelbhratach project in schools again in 2019. This scheme is funded by Foras na Gaeilge and run by Gael Linn with support from Conradh na Gaeilge and Glór na nGael and which gives vital support to the use of Irish in secondary schools and in primary schools throughout the island. The Gaelbhratach Irish language flag was awarded to 80 schools in 2018 and the scheme is going from strength to strength since it was launched in 2014.

The Colmcille Strategy 2019-2021 was approved, which sets out strategies for 2019-2021 and a mission to bring together Gaelic speakers of Scotland and Ireland. Under the Colmcille Grants Scheme £10,500 was approved for Club Óige Luraigh youth club to attend Fèis Eilean an Fhraoich in Lewis in July and August 2019. The grant will give an opportunity to teenagers and youth workers from County Derry to go to Lewis, a trip which will greatly increase the group’s awareness of Scottish Gaelic and will strengthen the relationship between themselves and their peers in Scotland.

A new scheme titled Scéim na Mor-Imeachtaí Ealaíon was approved, which will focus on major events which aim to promote the use of Irish in the community through the Irish language language-based arts. As well as that, the scheme will focus on the Irish language social networks, the general public and the arts sector on an all-island and international basis.

Foras na Gaeilge CEO, Seán Ó Coinn, said, “The wide range of the grants approved by Foras na Gaeilge today show the vigour of the Irish language at community level north and south in all areas of life. We hope that the grants will put the development of the Irish language on a strong and energetic footing at the start of 2019, and I congratulate all the groups who received funding from us during 2018, and who are now preparing for 2019, on their dedication and hard work.”

Aistear tríd an Inchinn launched by Máire Treasa Ní Cheallaigh

Well-known broadcaster and current RCSI medical student, Máire Treasa Ní Cheallaigh, took time off from her studies this evening to launch Aistear tríd an Inchinn in the new RCSI building at 26 York Street. Well-known for her work in the area of psychological performance Máire Treasa was well suited to launch this book and was unstinting in her praise for the publication.

The brain is our most important organ and perhaps the least well understood. It’s the command station for our body controlling what we think, what we feel and what we do. This colouring book seeks to increase our understanding of the brain in a succinct engaging way using text, images, brain maps and cartoons. It will give second-level pupils and adults alike an insight into how the brain works and into its central role together with the nervous system in directing how our whole body operates. Colouring books are increasingly popular today and used widely in the development of mindfulness and well-being. This book will be a welcome Irish language resource in these areas.

Originally published as Journey through the Brain authored by researchers from the Department of Psychiatry in RCSI (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland) with grant assistance from the Knowledge Exchange and Dissemination Scheme of the Health Research Board.

Tá duais €1000 don chlár raidió is fearr.

Déanann Bliain na Gaeilge ceiliúradh ar theanga na nGael, agus ó mhí Eanáir i mbliana bhí réimse leathan imeachtaí agus tograí ar bun agus é mar aidhm acu suim agus rannpháirtíocht sa teanga a spreagadh i measc an phobail, agus aird a dhíriú ar thábhacht na nGaeltachtaí agus ar athbheochan na teanga le 125 bliain anuas.

Tá dhá chéim leis an gcomórtas seo ag RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.

Ar dtús báire, tugtar cuireadh do scoileanna dara leibhéal ar fud na hÉireann, thuaidh agus theas, moltaí a chur isteach do chlár raidió 30 nóiméad ar fhad, i nGaeilge, bunaithe ar an téama ‘Bliain na Gaeilge 2018’.  Is é Dé Luain 17 Nollaig an spriocdháta.

Ansin, roghnófar an cúig iarratas is fearr, agus cuirfear léiritheoir raidió ag obair leis na scoileanna leis na cláracha sin a chur i dtoll a chéile.  Craolfar iad ar RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta le linn Sheachtain na Gaeilge i mí Márta 2019.

Bronnfar €1000 ar an gclár is fearr.  Is éard a bheidh á lorg ag na moltóirí cláracha a bhfuil samhlaíocht agus nuálaíocht ag baint leo.

Tá an comórtas seo á reáchtáil le tacaíocht ó Fhoras na Gaeilge.

Is deis iontach atá anseo do dhaltaí scoile foghlaim faoi chúrsaí craoltóireachta agus cúrsaí raidió, agus suim a spreagadh iontu i saol na Gaeilge sa lá atá inniu ann.

Tá gach eolas faoin gcomórtas agus foirm iarratais ag www.rte.ie/rnag/comortas2018  .  Is féidir ceisteanna a chur chuig comortas2018@rte.ie

Caithfear iarratais a bheith ag RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta faoin Luan 17 Nollaig.
